Dead Boy Detectives Will Solve Their Cases On Netflix, Not Max

It’s the case of the shuffling streaming platforms! Last year, then-HBO Max was all set to stream Dead Boy Detectives, a series that has its roots in Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman—and has a stellar creative team in showrunner/developer Steve Yockey (The Flight Attendant), showrunner Beth Schwartz (Sweet Tooth), executive producer Jeremy Carver (Doom Patrol), and Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter of Berlanti Productions.

But in the wake of the creative shuffle happening at DC Studios, the Boys will be doing their detecting over on Netflix instead. Which makes sense, actually, given that The Sandman also happens at Netflix; now this show is billed as “set in The Sandman universe.” Crossover time, maybe?

Though given the peppy vibe of this trailer, it’s a little hard to imagine Morpheus hanging out with these guys.

Here’s the synopsis:

Do you have a pesky ghost haunting you? Has a demon stolen your core memories? You may want to ring the Dead Boy Detectives. In this new supernatural series set in The Sandman universe, two teenagers find each other in death… and they will do anything to stick together – including escaping evil witches, Hell and Death herself. With the help of a clairvoyant named Crystal, they must work together to crack some of the mortal realm’s most mystifying paranormal cases.

I am not going to ask questions about how ghosts got themselves set up with a telephone number. I am somewhat skeptical about believing that these gents are teens, though they do at least seem younger than the teens on Riverdale. Said “teens” are played by George Rexstrew and Jayden Revri, who are joined in the series by Kassius Nelson, Yuyu Kitamura, Jenn Lyon, Briana Cuoco, Ruth Connell, Lukas Gage, and David Iacono.

Yockey told Tudum, “If The Sandman is this really lush, rich supernatural drama, then Dead Boy Detectives is the Hardy Boys on acid.” And Gaiman has in fact already promised that the dynamic dead duo will encounter one of The Sandman’s Endless. Which one? It’s a mystery.

Dead Boy Detectives premieres on Netflix in April.
